Department of Executive

Through offices in our department, key coordination and advisory functions are performed for the Government of the Northwest Territories. We invite you to visit each area highlighted for more details on the individual roles of the offices and the co-ordination of the GNWT agenda, initiatives and strategies

Advice and support to the Premier, Executive Council, and Ministers’ Offices is provided through the office of the Secretary to Cabinet, the senior most public servant.

The Cabinet Secretariat provides broad advice on priorities, strategies, policies and legislation to the Premier and Cabinet. Additionally, this office provides GNWT departments with policy advice and assistance with Cabinet submissions, interdepartmental initiatives and workshops for the public service.

The Strategic Planning Branch has responsibility for providing strategic advice on matters that have government-wide implications, coordinating the development and implementation of the government-wide strategic plan; coordinating socio-economic research, and ensuring that the government has current, consistent and accurate statistical information and analysis available. The NWT Bureau of Statistics is part of the Strategic Planning Branch.

The Office of Devolution represents the GNWT for negotiations with the Government of Canada and Aboriginal governments in the NWT for the transfer of provincial-type powers, programs and responsibilities to the Northwest Territories.

Acting as a point of contact within the GNWT on issues of concern to women is one function of the office of the Women's Advisory. In addition, this office provides advice, and supports the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, and plays a key role in major territorial initiatives to advance women's equality issues.

Information for Protocol functions including official visits of dignitaries, co-ordination of special events, flag protocol and governmental functions are coordinated through Corporate Communications and Protocol office. Broad communication advice for government-wide initiatives including advice to support Cabinet lead initiatives and strategies is one of the functions of Corporate Communications.

The Departments of Executive, Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations, Human Resources and the Financial Management Board Secretariat each receive financial advice and financial analysis from the Corporate Services office. In addition, this office manages purchasing, contracts and accounts for these areas.

Department of Executive Regional Directors located in each of the NWT's five regions work with regional senior managers and key stakeholders to improve government communications and to help coordinate the consistent delivery of government programs and services and the implementation of interdepartmental intiatives in their regions.
