Strategic Planning Branch
The Strategic Planning Branch has responsibility for providing strategic advice on matters that have inter-governmental or government-wide implications; for coordinating the development, and periodically updating the government-wide strategic plan and ensuring that its implementation is effectively coordinated; for coordinating socio-economic research within the government, and for ensuring that the government has appropriate statistical information and analysis, and providing statistical advice and assistance to departments, regional offices and central agencies. NWT Bureau of Statistics is part of the Strategic Planning Branch.
At the beginning of their mandate the 15th Legislative Assembly adopted a vision and set of goals that focus on self-reliance and shared responsibility, and conveys a sense of optimism and confidence about the future of the NWT. Building upon this theme, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) developed the Strategic Plan – Self-reliant People, Communities and Northwest Territories – A Shared Responsibility – that sets out priorities and actions for the GNWT over a 10-year planning timeframe.
This plan, annual progress reports on the actions related to the GNWT Strategic Plan, and annual compendia of measures that help identify progress towards the Strategic Plan’s goals are available from the department's Publications page.
Strategic Planning also publishes an annual Socio-economic scan and Statistical supplement. The Socio-economic scan is intended to provide an overview of current and past social and economic conditions of the Northwest Territories. The Statistical supplement provides the statistical data presented in the Scan.
The NWT Bureau of Statistics has overall responsibility for the territorial government’s statistical program. To fulfill this role, the Bureau of Statistics:
- develops, interprets and disseminates those economic, social and demographic statistics required by the government;
- implements statistical programs for territorial government purposes and provides statistical advice and assistance to departments, regional offices and central agencies;
- coordinates statistical activities within the government to minimize the duplication of statistical effort and to help ensure that the statistics used by the government are current, consistent and accurate; and
- provides for the continuing and effective representation of territorial statistical interests within the national statistical system.
In addition, the Bureau of Statistics also provides a limited statistical service to the general public, to the private sector, and other governments. A wide range of statistical information is available from the Bureau of Statistics website at http://www.stats.gov.nt.ca.
